Scottish Premiership big-hitters could take a punt on Toyosi Olusanya

St Mirren look set to lose one of their top players, with striker Toyosi Olusanya showing no signs of extending his stay with the club beyond this season.

Manager Stephen Robinson admitted he was fighting a losing battle to keep him last November and it appears his worst fears will be realised at the end of the campaign.

Olusanya's pace and strength have attracted admiring glances from elsewhere, with Aberdeen reportedly among the clubs who are keen to sign him.

However, it is not unreasonable to think that Scottish Premiership giants Rangers could swoop for Olusanya if he continues to impress with St Mirren.

According to Football Today, Rangers’ financial situation means they will need to be creative by identifying bargain signings in the summer transfer window.

A summer move for Olusanya could be on the cards given that he has become one of the most productive strikers in Scotland this term.

Since St Mirren returned to the top flight in 2018, none of their players have topped Jamie McGrath's 17-goal haul during the 2020/21 campaign.

Olusanya is on course to better that tally and he could be rewarded by landing a lucrative move elsewhere at the end of the season.

Strike partner Mikael Mandron has benefited from having Olusanya alongside him and believes he has the ability to make his mark higher up the scale.

“Toy and myself up front work really well together,” Mandron said. “He is so fast and so strong - he is always going to run in behind and he will always get on the end of balls that may not look the best.

“I’m more often than not the one who drops to try and get flick-ons, or if I can get on the ball and turn, I’m always looking for him.

“I still don’t think he has ran to his fastest pace - he always seems to have an extra gear. He is going to give problems to any defender. I don’t think anyone can actually deal with him.

“I don’t think he has a ceiling. I don’t want to put any limits on him. He has shown this season that he can score goals at any time and of any type.

“He has pace, power and there’s his finishing. That can work at any level.”

Olusanya’s performance at Ibrox towards the end of October was the perfect audition for a potential transfer to Rangers during the summer transfer window.

He ran centre-backs Leon Balogun and Robin Propper ragged, showcasing how the extra fitness work he has put in off the field has helped him blossom.

Robinson has taken Olusanya under his wing, delivering the type of tough love that many strikers need to fulfil their potential.

The 27-year-old has admitted that he previously had a questionable attitude, but working under Robinson has helped him improve his all-round game.

"I know I've got things that I am good at and things that I can be better at,” Olusanya said. “When you step onto the field, you've got to be confident in yourself and believe in yourself. I always have done and always will do.

"It's about improving and constantly trying to get better. The one thing I don't want to do is revert to type and slack on things because that's when things start to change."

Given the progress Olusanya has made at St Mirren, it would be no surprise to see him kick on again if he gets the chance to showcase his talents with one of the top clubs in Scotland.
